Dinos sweep Bobcats in straight sets

CALGARY – Playing their first home match of 2020, the University of Calgary Dinos women's volleyball team put on a dominant offensive performance, sweeping the Brandon University Bobcats in three straight sets at the Jack Simpson Gym Friday evening (25-21, 25-12, 25-22).

Three Dinos earned double-digit kills, as Trinity Solecki, Beth Vinnell and Adriel Goodman topped the leaderboard with 11 apiece. On the Bobcats' side, captain Ravyn Wiebe concluded the night with nine kills and five digs.

Senior setter Lexi Peart orchestrated a fast tempo in the first set, prompting an early lead for the Dinos that was further complemented by her two aces. Consequently, the Bobcats struggled to adjust on defence, allowing the Dinos to push through with a 25-21 victory.

In the second set, the Dinos took the intensity to a whole new level as veteran middle Beth Vinnell opened round two with three kills, en route to finishing the set with seven. Calgary's offensive effort was reflected in a team hitting percentage of .667, compared to Brandon's .231.

"The keys to this one was taking care of our serve-pass game and making sure that we controlled our own play first and foremost, brought our own intensity and most importantly played our game," said Vinnell postgame. "Moving forward, we need to continue to be aggressive, play confident, take care of serve-receive."

In the third set, the Dinos excelled in limiting Bobcat opportunities to score and registered six team blocks, earning touches on most of the Bobcats' offence. The Bobcats scrambled to generate offence and resort to tipping in attempts to locate holes in the Dinos' unfaltering defense. The Bobcats make a final effort to catch up at 17-22, coming within one point of the Dinos, but steady defense and consistent serves secure a 25-22 triumph for the Dinos.

The Dinos will focus on carrying this all-around strong performance into Saturday's rematch against the Bobcats at 4 p.m. MT in the Jack Simpson Gym.
