The Winnipeg Wesmen offence broke out in a big way Saturday and got the team back to the .500 mark heading into the holidays.
The Wesmen men's basketball team set its season-high for points, matched a season-high with eight three-pointers, shot a season-best from the free-throw line, and got 24 points from Don Dayrit to drop the Brandon Bobcats 94-73 in a Canada West conference game at the Duckworth Centre.Â
The win pushed the Wesmen to 4-4 on the season and a game back of three other teams for top spot in the East Division. Brandon fell to 1-7.
Dayrit shot 9-for-18 from the field and was a season-best 5-for-7 from three, including a four-point play on the last shot of the first quarter that put Winnipeg up to stay at 20-17.Â
Dayrit started the game by missing four of his first five shots before the four-point play swung momentum Winnipeg's way. He would score 12 of his game-high total in the second quarter when the Wesmen made their biggest moves.Â
A 15-1 run over the final 2:05 of the first quarter and first 55 seconds of the second quarter gave the Wesmen a 25-17 advantage, and a few minutes later they would string together 17 straight points, holding BU without a bucket for five minutes, 24 seconds and pushing their lead to 47-23.Â
The Wesmen shot a middling 8-for-25 from three, but hit eight of their next 14 after starting the game 0-for-4.
