BRANDON, Man. – Saturday saw a slow start from both the Brandon Bobcats and Regina Cougars, but in the end the Cougars picked up the weekend sweep thanks to a 66-41 win at the BU Healthy Living Centre.
The Cougars led 26-18 at the half as neither team was particularly efficient on offence early, but the Cougars stuck to their game and came away with the win.
The Cougars beat beat the Bobcats in most statistical categories as well as the score sheet, out rebounding the Bobcats 59 to 35, shooting at a 36.4% rate to Brandon's 20.6%, and more than doubling the assist mark at 15 to six.
Despite the quiet first half the two teams were evenly matched in the third until a 12-2 run from Regina made it 46-31, forcing Bobcats' bench boss James Bambury to call a time-out.
The Cougars took at 15-point lead into the fourth and held on.
Regina was led by senior guard Madeleine Tell's game-high 15 points. Rachel Vanderhooft finished with a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) while Dayna Pearce finished with 10 points and nine boards.
The Bobcats were led by the backcourt duo of
Chelsea Misskey and Piper Ingalls who both finished with 13 points.
The win improves Regina's record to 2-0 while the Bobcats fall to 0-2.
Up next for the Cougars will be a tough test in team's home-opener as they welcome provincial rivals the Saskatchewan Huskies.
The Bobcats will travel to Kelowna for a weekend set against the UBC-Okanagan Heat. It will be the first time the Heat and Bobcats have played in a conference game since November of 2018.
