BRANDON – The Bobcats showed a ton of fight but the Winnipeg Wesmen and fifth-year star Kyanna Giles proved to be too much, as the Wesmen picked up an 84-62 victory Saturday night at the HLC.
Giles did it all for the Wesmen, finishing with 43 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds in extending the team's win streak to four and improving to 7-1 in conference play.
The Wesmen had a great start, as the Wesmen forced a steal and a fast break before an and-1 bucket in transition from Kyanna Giles in the game's first possession.
The Wesmen extended the lead to 26-12 late in the first but the Bobcats hung around, trimming the deficit before taking the lead early in the second at 30-29.
The two teams traded blows throughout the rest of the second and into the third, thanks in large part to the play of
Eden Tabin, as the third-year forward was wreaking havoc on the defensive end and assisting in great ball movement on the other end.
The Wesmen managed to gain some momentum late in the third behind a tough effort from Giles. The Winnipeg product hit a tough shot through contact to kickstart a 10-0 run, which included a three from Alyssa Porco, as well as a triple and lay-up from Giles to take Winnipeg's largest lead at 63-53.
Giles took over in the fourth, putting up 15 points in the quarter on the way to her career high.
The Bobcats were led by
Piper Ingalls who finished with 22 points, which was also a career high.
The Bobcats now enter the December break still searching for the team's first conference win of the season.
The team resumes conference play in the new year at home against the UBC Thunderbirds on January 6.
