CALGARY – The Bobcats had strong showings in the first and fourth quarters in the team's post-season debut but cold streaks in the middle of the game proved costly as the UNBC Timberwolves picked up an 87-60 win at Mount Royal University.
It was the team's first and only game in the single-elimination knockout tournament that featured all 17 Canada West teams and while the score wasn't the result they'd hoped for the Bobcats still showed promise.
"Really freaking proud of them," said coach
James Bambury following the team's performance.
"I see so much greatness in the future we just can't wait to get going again."
The Bobcats led after the first quarter thanks in large part to
Chelsea Misskey's two three-pointers in the opening frame.
The three-point line was incredibly important to the young Bobcats, as they attempted 50 shots from beyond the arc, making 13 of them. Brandon only attempted 24 shots from the two-point territory.
"Really, in the first quarter and the fourth quarter, I thought we played quite well," said Bambury.
"All year, our gameplan was getting a three, getting to the paint, or keeping moving the ball. We kept getting wide open looks. Unfortunately, if you're not going to make them, that's the nature of the beast."
Andrea Taruc's highlight half-court shot to end the third set the tone for the fourth quarter but it was too little too late.
Seven Timberwolves scored in double figures, led by Emma vanBruinessen's 15 and also had 20 rebounds.
Anastasia Soltes added 12 points, Shakirova finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Sveta Boykova went for 11 points and 12 boards. Sarah Kuklisin had 10 points, while Laura Garmendia Garcia came off the bench with 10 points and 12 boards.
The Bobcats were led by
Piper Ingalls team-high 13 points while
Sydney Latrace and
Adrianna Proulx both finished with 12 points. Misskey wasn't far behind with 11 on the night.
The loss concludes the Bobcats season.
