Golden Bears earn weekend sweep

EDMONTON – Fourth-year guard Brandon Meiklejohn scored a game-high 25 points, leading the U SPORTS No. 6 ranked Alberta Golden Bears to a 115-82 win over the Brandon Bobcats.
 
Meiklejohn's performance comes on the heels of a 20-point outing in Friday night's 90-62 Alberta win. The Bears (11-5) were also led by 16 points from Julian Vaughs, and 14 points from Daniel McLaren, who finished the night shooting 6/8. Fifth-year Bear Abdullah Shittu also added 11 points on 5/5 shooting.
 
Brandon (8-8), who have lost their last five conference games, were led by Jahmaal Gardner's 24 points. The Bobcats struggled at their own end of the floor on Saturday night, allowing 60% of the Bears shots to fall, including 42% of their shots from deep.
 
Alberta led for all by 39 seconds on Saturday, securing the series sweep over Brandon.
 
QUICK HITTERS
  • Saturday night was the fourth time this season the Bears have scored 100+ in a game this season.
  • Both teams had all 12 players make their way onto the court, and each team saw 11 of their 12 players record at least one point.
  • Meiklejohn starting the game scoring hot, scoring 11 points in the opening quarter on 4/6 shooting. Alberta as a team shot 71% in the first, leading by a wide margin (32-13) after just 10 minutes.
  • The first quarter also saw a 16-point Bears run, staking them an early lead.
  • Vaughs added 11 points in the first half, as Alberta raced out to a 63-35 lead through 20 minutes. The Bears held a 22-8 lead in points in the paint through two, and a 23-10 rebound advantage.
  • Brandon struggled to find their offensive flow, going just 11/29 in the first half.
 
UP NEXT
  • The winners of five-straight, the 11-5 Golden Bears will visit the 5-11 Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend. Brandon (8-8) will look to end their losing streak when they visit the 8-8 Mount Royal Cougars.
