BRANDON, Man. – The UBC Thunderbirds are heading home four games above .500 after beating the Brandon Bobcats 77-49 Saturday.
The T-Birds managed the weekend sweep but Saturday was almost a mirrored reflection of Friday, as the teams battled early but UBC took control in the second half.
With the win UBC improves to 7-3 and inches closer towards clinching a playoff spot.
"I feel like we still have lots to work on but it was good having the challenge of us staying on top of our communication on the defensive end," said Taelor Coxford.
Saturday saw a much better start for Brandon than Friday, as the Bobcats managed to keep it close through the first 15 minutes. The T-Birds tightened up on defence in the second as Brandon struggled to score in the second.
The struggles on offence continued early into the third, as neither team was particularly efficient but the T-Birds managed to hang on to the lead.
UBC started the second half on a 17-5 run, extending the lead to as much as 30 late in the fourth quarter.
Coxford and Emily Martindale both finished with 12 points while Mona Berlitz wasn't far behind with 11.
Brandon was led by senior guard
Chelsea Misskey's team-high 10 points. Although held off the scoresheet, Brandon product
Josie Grift had a solid game, finishing with four rebounds, a blocked shot and three steals.
Up next for UBC will be another road trip, as the T-Birds will head to Kamloops to play a weekend set with the Thompson Rivers WolfPack next weekend.
The Bobcats will welcome provincial counterparts the Manitoba Bisons for a pair of games next Friday and Saturday.
Tip-off in Friday's contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
