Box Score

The Brandon University Bobcats (0-1) officially opened their 2025-26 Canada West season on the road Friday night, dropping a straight-sets match (15-25, 17-25, 12-25) against the host UBC Thunderbirds.

Facing the unanimous preseason No. 1 team in the Canada West Coaches Poll was a challenging test for the new-look Bobcats, who were ranked sixth to start the year. While the final score favoured the powerful Thunderbirds, the match provided essential experience and valuable data for the reigning national champions as they prepare for a challenging weekend.

Offensive Highlights and Valuable Reps

The Bobcats showed flashes of their offensive potential, particularly from veteran outside hitters. Senior Tom Friesen led the scoring charge, posting 7 kills with a solid .222 hitting percentage, showcasing the consistency that made him a key contributor to the National Championship. Fellow outside hitter Liam Pauls added 5 kills and notched one of the team's three service aces.

The match also saw new combinations in action as the team adjusts to the professional departure of J.J. Love. Setters Kale Fisher and Keon Torz shared duties, distributing the attack and getting crucial reps against a top-tier opponent. The team focused on serving aggression, totalling 3 aces in the tough environment of War Memorial Gym.

The Focus Now: Saturday Night and Growth

Head Coach Grant Wilson will emphasize learning and growth during the early season. Against the hard-hitting Thunderbirds, the Bobcats struggled to contain UBC's efficient attack, who finished the night hitting nearly .500 as a team.

The Bobcats will have an immediate opportunity to rebound when they face the Thunderbirds again on Saturday night in Vancouver before entering an early season bye week.

Don't Miss the Home Opener: 'Unleash the BOO-cats with a Halloween SPIKE-Tacular!'

Regardless of the weekend's final result, the focus now pivots entirely to the highly anticipated home opener on Friday, October 31st.

The Healthy Living Centre will host a one-of-a-kind Halloween-themed Banner Raising Night when the Bobcats welcome the Mount Royal University Cougars to Brandon. Fans of all ages are encouraged to participate in the costume contest. Plus for the kids a special Bobcat cubs zone and indoor trick-or-treating before the first serve!

This electric atmosphere will see the 2025 National Championship Banner officially lifted to the rafters, marking the first time the reigning champions play in front of their home crowd.
