Box Score The Brandon University Bobcats women's volleyball team officially kicked off the 2025-2026 Canada West season on the road Friday night, falling in straight sets (10-25, 21-25, 16-25) to the perennial power UBC Thunderbirds at War Memorial Gym.
While the final result was a tough start for the 'Cats, the team showed flashes of strong play, particularly from veteran performers. Senior middle Nerissa Dyer was highly efficient on offense, leading the team with 5 kills on just 12 attempts for an outstanding .417 hitting percentage. Fifth-year Setter Carly Thomson distributed the ball effectively, logging 12 assists and adding 2 kills of her own. Outside Hitter Cassidy Hauta provided a spark with 7.5 points, combining 5 kills and a team-high 2 service aces.
The Thunderbirds utilized a dominant service game to take control early, recording 15 aces overall and preventing the Bobcats from establishing consistent offensive rhythm in the first and third sets. Brandon showed excellent fight in the second set, however, pushing the Thunderbirds deep into the frame before eventually conceding the 25-21 decision. Libero Brooklyn Pratt led the defense with 10 digs, keeping many rallies alive.
Head Coach Kailan Robinson and the Bobcats now have a quick turnaround, as they face the UBC Thunderbirds again tomorrow, Saturday, October 18, at War Memorial Gym, looking to make adjustments and find their first win of the young season.
The team will then enjoy an early-season bye next weekend before returning to the Healthy Living Centre for a massive home opener weekend, beginning on Friday, October 31st, a night which will also feature the Men's Volleyball National Championship Banner Raising Ceremony.
