Two impact imports have been named Smitty's Sportsline Lounge Athletes of the Month for October.
League all-star
Matheus Souza was instrumental in the Brandon University men's soccer team finishing in first-place in the standings in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference. Souza and his crew won five straight regular season games in October with the Brazilian standout getting clean sheets in three of those contests. Souza and the nationally ranked Bobcats earned the right to host the league championship at HLC Field. His Bobcats blanked the Providence Pilots 2-0 in the semifinals before a heartbreaking extra time loss against the CMU Blazers in the title game.
Macaya Copeland has arrived as advertised for Brandon University women's basketball. Last year's American Junior College Division III Player of the Year was instrumental in BU's 2-0 start to the regular season with both wins coming against long-time rivals. Copeland collected 18 points in Brandon's 86-71 home court triumph over the Manitoba Bisons on Friday. She then scored 15 of her team-high 22 points in the third quarter as the Blue and Gold prevailed on the road 79-65 against the Winnipeg Wesmen. She helped solidify the weekend sweep by nailing a three-point dagger with under six minutes left in regulation on Sunday. The last time Brandon University women's basketball had gone undefeated out of the gate in Canada West was 2003.
