The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a home and home series sweep over the Brandon Bobcats with a dramatic 3-2 (25-21, 29-27, 10-25, 23-25, 15-10) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Brandon was led by
Shanlee McLennan's 15 kills.
Chloe Reimer and
Meaghan Robertson each added 10.
Kendra Bommersbach led the team in digs with 24.
Kellie Baker had 44 assists in the setters position.
Alexis Loewen had nine blocks.
Winnipeg jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the technical timeout of the opening set. The Bobcats made a couple of runs to pull closer, including late in the set to make the score 21-18. Winnipeg responded with kills by Nikolic and Lynch to make the score 24-18. The Wesmen went on to win the set 25-21.
The Bobcats responded in the second set leading 16-15 at the technical break and carried the lead all the way to set point at 24-20. The determined Wesmen squad reeled off four straight points to tie the score at 24-24. An exchange of points carried the score to 27-27 but Winnipeg would close out the set on back to back kills by Kruschel and Nikolic to win the set 29-27.
In the third set Brandon simply dominated jumping out to a 16-5 lead at the technical and eventually getting back in the match with a 25-10 set three win.
A Carleen Kruschel kill gave the Wesmen a 16-14 lead at the timeout. Winnipeg carried a two point advantage all the way to 23-21 and had the match in their sights. Brandon had other ideas and took advantage of three Wesmen attacking errors to win the set 25-23 to force a fifth and deciding set.
Winnipeg led the fifth set by a score of 10-3 and never looked back winning the deciding set 15-10 to complete the sweep.
The Wesmen will close out their first half schedule on Tuesday night in the volleyball portion of the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge against the Bisons at the University of Manitoba. Brandon will next play in January with a visit to Trinity Western.
