Box Score EDMONTON - Facing the No.4 and defending Canada West champion Brandon University Bobcats, third-years Kevin Proudfoot and Ryley Barnes vaulted the No.1 University of Alberta Golden Bears to their third-straight victory and their second in straight sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-23), Friday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.
Right side Proudfoot spun 13 kills for a blistering 63% attack percentage while left side Barnes equalled his teammate with 13 kills and added an ace. Veteran setter Jarron Mueller had a match-high 33 assists.
Sam Tuivai, a 2012-13 CIS All-Canadian and CIS Championship Tournament All-Star, netted eight kills for the Bobcats, as did fourth-year middle
Brendan White. Third-year setter
David Stasica earned a team-high 17 assists.
Scoring by committee earned Alberta the first set, four different players putting up three or more kills while Brandon struggled on the attack, combining into a 9-2 run the Bears used to pull away from a tight score.
The two squads fought back and forth in the middle set but Proudfoot, a Calgary native, put his stamp on the set with six kills and no errors on only seven attacks, Alberta clicking at a rate of 43% as a team before Tuivai, a third-year left side, closed out the set for the Bears with a return error on a Brett Walsh serve.
Barnes, hailing from St. Paul, Alta., then took center stage in the final set, scoring three of the Bears first four points but Brandon stayed in the match at every turn, even erasing a late five-point deficit to pull the score to 24-23 before Barnes raised Alberta to victory on a powerful kill that overwhelmed third-year outside hitter
Daryl McCharles.
The 3-0 Bears and 2-1 Bobcats will play the second game of their two-game series on Saturday, game time going at approximately 5:00 p.m. MT.
