BRANDON, Manitoba — The University of Manitoba Bisons claimed victories in both the men's and women's matches this weekend, defeating the Brandon University Bobcats in Canada West volleyball action at the Healthy Living Centre.
In front of more than 2,100 people over the 2 nights, The Bobcats gave it their best effort despite falling short.
Women's Volleyball: Manitoba 3, Brandon 1
The Manitoba Bisons Women's team defeated the Brandon Bobcats in four sets (25-14, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17).
The Bisons' attack was relentless, recording a powerful .348 hitting efficiency as a team. Outside hitters Ella Gray and Raya Surinx led the charge, with Gray recording a team-high 17 kills on a highly efficient .548 hitting mark. Surinx also tallied 17 kills along with three aces for the Bisons. Setter Julia Martens directed the potent offense with 40 assists.
The Bobcats showed resilience in the third set, securing a 25-23 victory. Outside hitter Stephanie Miller led the home side with 11 kills, four aces, and 15 digs, demonstrating a strong all-around performance. Middle blocker Nerissa Dyer was a factor at the net, recording six kills and five combined blocks. Setter Carly Thomson finished with 33 assists, and libero Brooklyn Pratt anchored the defense with 13 digs.
Men's Volleyball: Manitoba 3, Brandon 0
The Manitoba Bisons Men's team earned the sweep in straight sets (25-16, 25-23, 25-19) over the Brandon Bobcats.
Manitoba's net play and precision hitting were key, as the Bisons registered a collective .441 hitting efficiency and secured 10.0 team blocks. Middle blocker Jordon Heppner was exceptionally efficient for the Bisons, posting seven kills with an .875 hitting percentage, while also contributing six total blocks. Outside hitters Eric Ogaranko and Owen Weekes recorded 12 kills and 11 kills, respectively.
For the Bobcats, outside hitter Liam Kindle led all scorers with 15 kills on a strong .400 hitting efficiency. Senior Tom Friesen added nine kills and three aces. Setter Kale Fisher managed the Brandon attack with 35 assists, showcasing the team's strong distribution despite the loss.
Both teams now enter the 2nd bye of the season before welcoming UBCO Heat in 2 weeks.
