Women's volleyball records first loss of regular season

Box Score EDMONTON - The University of Alberta Pandas picked up a straight-sets win (25-23, 25-21, 25-16) over the No.6 Brandon University Bobcats, Friday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.

Third-year left side Shanlee McLennan spun eight kills to top the Bobcats, with senior setter Kellie Baker earning 19 assists in the loss.

Casault put up the first point on the scoreboard, one of seven in the opening set for the second-year, and her final point began an 8-2 run by the home team to reclaim the lead and take the first set, finishing with Brandon rookie Vaovai Aiono, who earned six points herself on three kills and three aces, putting her cross-court attempt beyond the Alberta service line.

Opening up the second set, Casault, who did not start for the Pandas last season, fired off two aces in the first three Alberta points and rang up four straight kills in a 7-2 run midway through the set, last year's CIS silver medalists never looking back, despite the Bobcats drawing back to within one at 21-20 before sophomore middle Jessica Stroud spearheaded a quick run to give the Pandas a 2-0 set lead.

Struggling a little in the final set, Casault committed three straight attack errors to give Brandon the lead, but when the Physical Education & Recreation got to the service line, her, Janssen, and sophomore outside hitter Kacey Otto fueled an 11-2 run, each Panda netting four kills in the set, before Casault ended the game herself by firing the ball of Bobcat left side Victoria Dakin just inside the road team's service line.

Alberta, improving to 1-2 on the season, and 2-1 Brandon will play the second game of their two-game series on Saturday, game time going at approximately 6:30 p.m. MT.
