Men's Volleyball

Men's volleyball team cool off the Heat

Box Score The UBC Okanagan Heat's Riley McFarland (fifth-year, Surrey, BC) had a game-high 22 kills on 56 attempts, but he could not carry the Heat to a victory over the Sam Tuivai-less Bobcats as Brandon took a five-set thriller (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-13).

6'9 middle Brendan White recorded a team-high 14 points on a highly efficient .458 perecentage en-route to a team-high 21.5 points for the night in the effort for the Bobcats. Fellow middle Dan Boutwell followed closely with 13 kills on an even better .500 percentage. Senior setter Garret Popplestone recorded 40 assists and 13 digs as well.

On the other side of the net, Heat coach Greg Poitras tried several different lineup combinations for the Heat, and frequently switched back and forth between rookie setter Kristof Schlagintweit and fourth-year setter Davis Proch, who recorded 21 and 29 assists respectively. The team most frequently went to McFarland in search of offense, but fourth-year Greg Niemantsverdriet managed 13 kills and 16.0 points in the effort as well behind McFarland's 22 kills and game-high 24.5 points.

The Bobcats already locked down a playoff berth, and an improved 12-9 record will mean little for a team that is simply readying for the playoffs. Meanwhile, the now 2-19 Heat have one last chance at a win this season tomorrow night in a rematch versus the Bobcats. Tomorrow night will be Senior's night, wherein the Heat will honor graduating players Brett Uniat, Jeremy Kler and McFarland. The match starts at 7 p.m.
