MVB team drops pre-season match to Winnipeg

WINNIPEG - Third year outside hitter Casey Schouten had 25 kills to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) pre-season sweep over the Brandon University Bobcats Wednesday night in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.
Schouten also finished the match with three service aces and a pair of blocks. David Bommersbach finished with eight kills. Josh McKay had eight digs and Garrett Jones also had two blocks.

Fifth year right side Sebastien Steigmeier led the Bobcats with 17 kills.

Both teams showed their pre-season rust in the early stages of the opening set with numerous serving errors on both sides. Once the teams settled down Winnipeg led 16-14 at the technical timeout. Brandon stayed within reach of the Wesmen but kills down the stretch by Schouten paced Winnipeg to a 25-22 first set victory.

Winnipeg carried their momentum into the second set racing out to a 16-12 lead. The Wesmen took advantage of some Brandon errors late in the set and eventually took control of the match winning the second set 25-19.

Brandon seemed to find their game in the early part of the third set. The Bobcats took a 16-12 advantage in the technical timeout. The Wesmen responded going on a 6-2 run to tie the score at 18-18. The teams exchanged points down the stretch until kills by Schouten and Bommersbach paced Winnipeg to a 25-23 win in the set to complete the match.

The Wesmen and Bobcats will continue their pre-season schedules at the University of Regina Cougars Invitational taking place this Friday to Sunday.
