It was a match with lots of lead changes and lots of emotion, but in the end the Brandon Bobcats hung on for a five-set win over the Calgary Dinos 3-2 (25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 21-25, 15-11).
Saturday's contest was the second half of a weekend series between the two teams, and was the second night in a row to go to five sets between the two.
The first set saw the two teams trade blows before Brandon came away with it, but the second set proved to be the most pivotal. After the Bobcats jumped to an early 13-5 lead, the Dinos stormed back to lead 16-15 at the technical time-out. An over-turned call on a touch gave BU the lead back late in the set, but the Dinos refused to go away as they captured the frame.
Calgary wasn't done fighting there either, as the Dinos clawed their way back into the fourth set after trailing by three points at the technical time-out, but BU jumped to an early 8-4 lead in the fifth and didn't look back.
All four regular season matches for the Bobcats have gone to five sets.
Third-year setter Mary Thomson quarterbacked the Bobcats offence wonderfully, picking up 55 assists on the night, just three shy of tying the BU school record. Thomson also added a team-high 14 digs. Jodie Baker was great on both sides of the ball, racking up 13 kills and seven blocks. Victoria Dakin had a team-high 15 kills, while Shanlee McLennan added 13 kills and nine digs, and Meaghan Robertson put up 12 kills.
Three Dinos finished in double-digit kills, while Amber Brown was outstanding on defense, notching 28 digs. Ali Wooley had a match-high 17 kills, while Kate Pexman had 14 kills and Janna Ogle had 10 kills to go along with 10 digs.
The win improves Brandon's record to 3-1, while Calgary falls to 3-3. Up next for the Bobcats is a weekend road trip to Edmonton to play the MacEwan Griffins. The Dinos will welcome the Alberta Pandas for a weekend series.
