Bobcats fall in rare Wednesday game to Wesmen

WINNIPEG - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the No. 7 ranked Brandon University Bobcats in five tough sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 22-25, 19-17) in a rare Wednesday night match at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg with the victory snaps a five match losing streak, improving their record to 8-11. Brandon with the loss drops to 11-8.

Aaliyah Masepela led Winnipeg with 13 kills to go along with four blocks. Hailey Buhler and Mackenzie Jeffrey each had 11 kills while Tia Boroski had 10 kills and a match high 25 digs. Setter Ellina Domnidou finished with 36 assists and 21 digs.

Brandon was led by Tori Dakin's 16 kills. Jodi Baker was next with 13 kills. Libero Donata Huebert led the team in digs with 24. Meaghan Robertson had four blocks while setter Mary Thomson had 35 assists and 23 digs.

The first set was dead even at the beginning of the set and that carried over to the technical timeout with Brandon holding a 16-15 lead. The teams battled to 20-20 when Winnipeg found some breathing room scoring three straight points, two on kills by Hailey Buhler to take a 23-20 lead. Winnipeg went on to win the opening set 25-22. 

Set number two was a carbon copy of the opening set, but on this occasion Winnipeg grabbed a 16-15 lead at the technical break. Brandon got the lead back late in the set, thanks to a pair of kills by Jodie Baker which propelled the Bobcats to a 25-22 win to even the match at 1-1.

Winnipeg came out on fire in set number three building a 16-9 at the technical break. The hometown Wesmen kept the pressure on the Bobcats and went on to win the set 25-17.

In the fourth set Brandon was able to regroup and jumped out to a 10-3 advantage early on. A kill by Jodie Baker gave the Bobcats a 16-11 lead at the technical break. Just when it looked like Brandon would run away with the set, Winnipeg had other ideas. Brandon held a 19-14 lead when Winnipeg went on a 5-0 run, with two kills by Buhler to tie the set at 19-19. The Bobcats recovered and forced a fifth set with a 25-22 win in set number four.

Set number five was one for the ages. Winnipeg jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead until Brandon soon after tied the set at 13-13. The teams remained tied at 15-15 and 17-17 when Winnipeg put an end to the over two hour and twenty minute battle. Kills by Masepela and Jeffrey gave the Wesmen a 19-17 win in the final set to win the match 3-2.

The two teams will continue their home and home series on Friday night in Brandon. Women play at 6:00 p.m. while the men's match is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
