Box Score BRANDON – The Trinity Western Spartans were ranked #3 in the Canada West pre-season coaches poll while the Brandon Bobcats were ranked #11, but the roles were reversed Friday night as the host Bobcats stunned the Spartans with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) win Friday night.
The Bobcats stormed out of the gates to an early 16-9 lead at the technical time-out before wrapping the first set up. Led by team captain
Roy Ching's nine kills on 11 swings in the first set, the Bobcats kept their foot firmly on the gas pedal, never trailing in the first or second sets. Trinity held a slight 3-1 lead to start the third before the Bobcats went on a 13-5 run to end the third set and the match.
Ching paced Brandon with a career-high 22 kills on an impressive 33 swings. Equally impressive was the Ching had no errors on the night. Playing in his first conference match as a Bobcat,
Matt Powell had 12 kills on 20 swings.
Rookie
Mason Metcalf impressed in his first conference start, putting up four blocks, while fifth-year setter
David Stasica had a match-high 36 assists.
The Spartans were led by Ryan Sclater's team-high 15 kills, while Blake Scheerhorn had 10 kills on 17 swings.
The Bobcats offense was particularly efficient, hitting at an .507 attack efficiency.
The win gives Brandon a 1-0 record on the season while Trinity Western sits at 0-1.
The rematch will go Saturday night at the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre. First serve is scheduled for 6:45 pm.
