KAMLOOPS - The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men's volleyball team have snapped a five match losing streak.
Before a large crowd on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre, the 'Pack downed the Brandon University Bobcats 3-2. The scores were 25-23,18-25,25-15, 22-15,15-11. TRU moves to 2-7 on the year while Brandon falls to 3-4.
WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly said it was a character win with this team rallying in the fourth set despite losing it. "Tim Edge (2nd year, outside hitter, Surrey, BC) came in and we made a comeback. That is what it is all about. You forget about the score and keep playing. It gave us momentum in the fifth. That momentum is important. We aren't going to hang our heads. You work hard and push for every set."
TRU was led offensively by Brad Gunter (5th year, outside hitter, Courtenay, BC). He had 24 kills in 47 opportunities with 11 digs and three block assists.
Daniel Eikeland Rod (4th year, outside hitter, Oz, Norway) had 12 kills in 41 chances with a service ace, four assists, eight digs and three block assists.
Brandon Hewwing (5th year, outside hitter, Calgary, AB) had 13 kills in 19 chances with nine digs.
Graham Stoliker had 49 assists, nine digs and a block assist.
One area where the WolfPack excelled in on this night was the play of their middles. Kyle Behiels (1st year, Edmonton,AB) was named the "TRU Bookstore/McDonalds Leader of the Pack" player of the match. He had six kills in 10 swings with five service aces, a solo block and two block assists.
Fellow first year middle Sam Taylor Parks (Kelowna, BC) had four kills in 13 chances with a service ace, three digs and five block assists.
Brandon was led by Roy Ching (4th year, outside hitter, Nelson, NZ) who had 22 kills in 56 chances with a service ace, seven digs and three block assists.
Reece Dixon (1st year, setter, Sherwood Park, AB) had 36 assists with nine digs.
Bobcat coach Grant Wilson said the match went as he expected it to go. " It is what usually happens when we come to town. It is always a battle. They were just a little bit steadier than we were down the stretch. They deserved to win."
Wilson said he saw a lot of character out his squad. "Considering what our lineup is right now and playing on the road, this will help us gain some experience and hopefully some confidence that we can get ourselves in this type of situation and get ourselves more consistent and more successful."
The two teams will play again Saturday (Nov 14) at 6:45 pm at the TCC.
