Kamloops - For the second straight year, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack have swept the Brandon University Bobcats in Canada West men's volleyball.
This time it happened on the Warner Rentals Court at the Tournament Capital Centre.
The 'Pack raised their record to 3-7 with a straight set (3-0) win over the Bobcats on Saturday. The scores were 25-15,25-20, 25-22. Brandon falls to 3-5 on the year.
The WolfPack needed five to down the Bobcats on Friday night.
In the third set, Brandon was up 10-6 at one point. With the score 13-12, TRU scored five straight points to take a 16-13 lead. After the Bobcats scored five straight to make it 18-16 and later led 21-20, the WolfPack scored five of the sets last six points to secure the victory.
"They were far better in all facets of the game and we didn't match their intensity or skill level from the first serve," explained Brandon head coach
Grant Wilson. "We did push them a bit but it wasn't consistent enough to win that set. They did what they needed to do after 20 and they watched us fumble the ball around."
TRU was again led offensively by Brad Gunter. The former Canada West and CIS Player of the Year had 19 kills in 38 chances with 10 digs. Graham Stoliker had 34 assists, one service ace and 12 digs. Brandon Hewwing had eight kills in 17 swings with four digs and one assist. Daniel Eikland Rod had eight kills in 21 chances with two assists, two service aces, three digs and one solo block.
"I thought Stoliker played some great defense early on and moved the ball around," stated Hennelly. "Brad was good, Brandon was good. Overall, I thought it was a good team effort. I thought everyone played some good volleyball. Cole Keddie played some good defense as well and made some really nice digs in the second set. That has been missing this year. In any sports, hard defense breaks teams. If you are picking balls up, they aren't getting success and that makes people think. That allows our block to come into play and our serve come into play. We want to be that tough defensive team and we showed signs of that in the second set."
The Bobcats were led by
Roy Ching with seven kills in 33 chances with an assist, eight digs and a block assist.Â
Reece Dixon had 14 assists.
Thompson Rivers has next weekend off while the Bobcats will welcome the UBCO Heat. TRU's next action is at home on Thursday, November 26
th against that same UBCO squad. Game time at the Tournament Capital Centre will be 7:45 pm.
