Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Bobcats' late surge not enough against WolfPack

Kamloops — It was a battle of attrition between the Bobcats women's volleyball team and host Thompson Rivers WolfPack Saturday night, but the cards would fall on the home team's side, as the 'Pack came away with a 3-2 (25-22,18-25,25-23,22-25,15-7) win.

It was the second time this season the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's volleyball team has swept a weekend series on home court.

The WolfPack move back to .500 at 5-5 while the Bobcats fall to 3-5.

"I thought our team came to play," Brandon coach Lee Carter said afterwards. "We played at the level that we need to in order to compete at times. It was a fun match to be a part of."

TRU was led by returning Canada West and CIS all-star Iuliia Pakhomenko, who put up an impressive 30 kills on 64 swings, to go with three service aces, nine digs and two block assists.

Pakhomenko was two kills short of a school record, which she set October 30, 2015 in a five set loss to the Calgary Dinos.  The Canada West record for kills in a single match is 34 held by Genevieve Lamarre set on February 7, 2004.

Morgan Kolasa had seven kills in 18 chances with two service aces, four digs, a solo block and a block assist.

Jodie Baker was the top offensive threat for Brandon. She had 14 kills in 26 chances with a dig.

Brianne Sytnyk  added 11 kills on 30 swings.

Hope Schnieder had 38 assists and five service aces to go along with 14 digs and two block assists.

"Hope has been waiting in the wings for a while,' Carter stated. " She works her butt off. It is pretty exciting for her."

He also praised the play of Nikki Majewski. "Even though she didn't score well she was matched up the entire time against Iuliia. She didn't neutralize her but she did a good enough job to make Iuliia feel like she was human today." Carter smiled.  Majewski wound up with eight kills in 27 chances with an assists, two service aces, seven digs and four block assists.

The WolfPack have next weekend off before playing a home and home series with the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat (Nov 26 and 28).
Brandon will host UBCO next weekend (Nov 20-21).
