Bears make it five in playoff drive

EDMONTON - The University of Alberta Golden Bears basketball team got another win on Saturday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre, as they defeated the Brandon Bobcats 86-66. The Bears shot 60% from the field to come away with the victory, moving them to 11-6 on the season.

The Bears were led offensively by second-year forward Mammadou Gueye, who had 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting along with a team-high nine rebounds in 36 minutes of play. Kenneth Otieno added 12 points in his 100th career Canada West conference game.

The Bobcats were led offensively for the second-straight night by third-year guard DJ Jordan, who had 19 points, while third-year forward Earl Thompson Jr. had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The first quarter opened very evenly as Jordan and Thompson Jr. got on the board early for Brandon while Otieno had the first seven points of the night for Alberta.

The Bears would push ahead to 23-16 as Friesen started to warm up, finishing with seven in the quarter, but a late jumper from Jordan kept it 23-18 after one. Jordan finished with 10 in the first for the visitors while Gueye, Otieno, and Friesen had seven points each for Alberta.

Alberta opened the second on a 7-4 run, courtesy four points from Sebastien Denault and a triple from Friesen to make it 30-22.

Some sloppy play by the Bears and big shots from Thompson Jr. kept Brandon in it, though, down just 39-30 at halftime.

Denham Buchanan scored the first basket of the second half for Brandon and then Alberta took over. They poured in 11 straight to jump ahead 50-32, capped by a big three from Otieno.

Yet Brandon would battle right back with an 11-3 run, led by six points from Thompson Jr. and they were down just 53-43.

Alberta would catch fire again, however, capped by an end-to-end layup by Youssef Ouahrig at the end of the quarter, making it 60-47 Bears.

Alberta quickly jumped back up by 20 behind three consecutive treys from Taylor Riar, Ouahrig, and Friesen, making it 71-51. The Bears would hold on from there, as the teams tied the rest of the quarter 15-15 and Alberta recorded the 86-66 victory.

The Golden Bears are in action next on Thursday evening, visiting the Calgary Dinos in a single-game battle at 8 p.m. MT. Alberta then returns home February 13th and 14th to host the Lethbridge Pronghorns at the SCSC as they wrap up the regular season. Brandon, meanwhile, wraps up their season at home next weekend as they host Victoria.
