BRANDON – The visiting Calgary Dinos snapped a three-game losing streak Friday night by beating the host Brandon Bobcats 82-58. The Dinos stormed out of the gates to an early lead, and didn't look back, despite a surge in the third quarter from the Bobcats.
The Dinos hit some big shots in the first half, going 18 for 31 from the floor and capitalizing on fast-break opportunities, while the Bobcats were plagued by turnovers, turning the ball over 16 times in the first two quarters.
The teams were evenly matched on the glass in the first half, and the Bobcats started the third quarter on a 13-4 run, but the Dinos ability to score when given open looks was the difference, as the Dinos never trailed through 40 minutes.
The Dinos shot 51.7 per cent from the floor in the game to the Bobcats 36.4 per cent, and forced 28 turnovers from the Bobcats.
Four Dinos finished in double-digit scoring, as Calgary was paced by Kelsey Lund's team-high 18 points. Brianna Ghali had 16 points, while Claire Colborne and Kristie Shiels each finished with 12 points.
Keisha Cox put up a game-high 21 points in the losing effort for the Bobcats while
Alyssa Montgomery recorded 12 points.
Bobcats Coach
Novell Thomas knows his team needs to be better on Saturday, especially in controlling the ball if the 'Cats hope to have any chance of beating Calgary.
"That's a very good Calgary team. They didn't hold anything back, nor should they. They're a very good team and we were caught three out of four quarters just watching," says Thomas. "With 28 turnovers you're not going to win a game. And that's just from being soft with the ball."
The rematch goes Saturday at the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 pm.
