Fourth year guard Megan Noonan scored a game high 33 points to lead the University of Winnipeg Wesmen to an 80-72 victory over the Brandon University Bobcats Saturday afternoon in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.
Noonan finished the contest with five-three pointers, six assists and three steals in 38 minutes of playing time.
Winnipeg with the win snaps an eight game winless streak and improves their record to 2-8 while the Bobcats drop to 5-3.
Lena Wenke had a solid game for the Wesmen finishing with 21 points and five-three pointers. Kerri Kuzbyt added 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Amy Williams led Brandon with 24 points and nine rebounds. Keisha Cox followed with 17 points. Alyssa Montgomery had 15 points.
Winnipeg was deadly from three-point territory draining 14 from beyond the arc. Brandon had three-three pointers in the contest.
Brandon looked to have things going their way in the opening quarter, jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead. Winnipeg rebounded down the stretch to trail 20-17 after the opening 10 minutes of play.
The Wesmen made their move in the second quarter. Brandon led 34-25 with 4:15 left when Winnipeg went on a 10-0 run, with Noonan scoring seven points during that time to grab their first lead of the game 35-34. Alyssa Montgomery scored five points for Brandon in the final minute to send the Bobcats into the halftime break with a 43-39 lead.
Winnipeg outscored Brandon 15-10 in the third quarter to carry a 54-53 lead into the final quarter.
In the final quarter Megan Noonan and Lena Wenke each drained a trio of three pointers to help Winnipeg close out the contest by a score of 80-72.
Winnipeg will have the bye in their schedule next week and resume play on January 22 hosting Victoria. Brandon will host the Calgary Dinos next Friday and Saturday.
