CALGARY – After two very close nights of play, the Mount Royal Cougars earned the weekend sweep on Saturday 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-19) over the Bobcats.
Both teams were evenly matched in all four sets and traded points through-out most of the night.
As the first set got under way both teams struggled keeping their serve in the court. A mixture of missed serves and strong attacks from either side had the first set tied at nine. The Bobcats utilized mixing offensive plays between tips and attacks. This allowed them to maintain their lead and the Cougars called their second timeout down 18-23, which helped narrow the deficit before an attack from Bobcats Elliot Viles ended the set 25-23.
The Cougars steadied the ship and won the remaining three sets thanks to a strong offensive attack and presence at the net. The Bobcats also struggled to find their serve in the remaining three sets, putting up three service aces to 20 errors on the night.
Seth Friesen led the Bobcats in kills with a total of 15. Tyler Schmidt led the Cougars with 20.
The win moves Mount Royal's record to 4-2 while the Bobcats hold the same record at 4-2.
The Cougars head to Kelowna next weekend to play the UBC-Okanagan, where as the Bobcats return home to take on another Calgary team in the Dinos. Friday's game is a rare afternoon contest with first serve scheduled for 1:15 pm.
