CALGARY – Mason Foreman's steal and score in the waning moments of the game secured an 87-85 win for the University of Calgary Dinos over the Brandon Bobcats at the Jack Simpson Gym.
After a lopsided loss less than 24 hours earlier, the Bobcats came to play on Sunday. Five Brandon players posted double-digit in points, but it was not enough to hold off the two-time defending Canada West champions.
"We were lucky," stated Dinos head coach Dan Vanhooren. "They played well, and we turned it over too much in the first half to a team of athletes and they just rolled down the floor and scored in transition."
Foreman dominated through the final quarter to seal the deal for the Dinos as he finished with 25 points and nine boards. Fourth-year forwards Edwin Jeudy and Brett Layton offered up 17 and 15 points each.
Third-year guard
Haashim Wallace was the Bobcats' driving force as he finished the evening with 29 points and four rebounds.
Anthony Tsegakele, who led the Bobcats on Saturday, finished with 12 points and rebounds.
Both teams were even through the first quarter as the Dinos and Bobcats kept the energy high on the court. The second quarter however was a different story as the Bobcats turned the tide to outpace the Dinos 30-19 and held the home team to only 30.4% shooting.
The Bobcats kept it going in the third as they eventually got up by 14. While the Dinos only managed to sink one of six three-point attempts, the team dominated in the paint as they kept up with the hot Bobcats' offence.
With just under four minutes left in the game, the Dinos found themselves down by 10 but quickly nailed back-to-back three-pointers to cut into the deficit. As the Bobcats continued to turn the ball over Calgary tied the game in the final minute.
Brandon had possession late on the shot clock when Foreman stripped a Bobcat of the ball and ran down the floor for the game-winning layup with 2.6 seconds left.
"We only had five turnovers in the second half and that makes a big difference for us offensively, but we shouldn't give up 85 points." said Vanhooren.
The Dinos are back in action next weekend as the host the Trinity Western University Spartans at Jack Simpson Gym on Nov. 22-23. The Bobcats are on the road next weekend as they make the trip to Vancouver Island to face the Victoria Vikes.
