SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Brandon Bobcats 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-19) to record the sweep on Saturday, Nov. 2 on Ron and Jane Graham Centre Court at the PAC.
After winning in three sets on Friday night, Saskatchewan picked up their second consecutive victory in the minimum amount of frames. With the win, the Huskies move to 5-1 on the season, which is their best start since the 1991-92 campaign, where they won 14 of their first 15 games.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats, who fell twice this weekend, are still looking for their first win of the season.
Saskatchewan held a notable advantage over Brandon in hitting percentage on the afternoon. The Huskies finished with a .344 clip, compared to Brandon's .095 mark.
Emily Koshinsky and Olivia Mattern led the way for the Huskies, with the pair of outside hitters recording nine kills and two service aces each. Mandi Fraser continued her strong start to the season, as she tallied eight kills of her own along with two service aces.
Rayvn Wiebe led Brandon the Bobcats with seven kills while also recording nine digs. Saskatoon native
Alexa Shoults recorded 21 assists, nine digs and one of four of the Bobcats service aces in the match
Saskatchewan's momentum from their sweep appeared to carry over to Saturday afternoon, as they marched out to a quick 11-4 lead in the opening set, forcing an early Brandon timeout. However, the timeout didn't seem to settle the Bobcats, as the Huskies built upon their lead. Saskatchewan closed the frame on a 6-2 run, with Mattern's kill in the tail end of the frame sealing the 25-12 opening set win for the home side.
However, in the second set, Brandon appeared to find their footing. The Bobcats led 16-14 in a back-and-forth frame, but from there, the Huskies found their groove and pulled away from the visitors. Saskatchewan rallied off seven consecutive points to take a 21-16 lead, with Koshinsky leading the way during the run with two kills. After a Bobcat service error led to set point, for the second frame in a row, a Mattern kill closed off the set in favour of the Huskies with a 25-20 scoreline.
Much like the second frame, the teams were exchanging points in the early going. With the match tied at 8-8, the Huskies rallied and went on a 9-3 run to grab ahold of the set. From there, Saskatchewan was able to take care of business, leading to match point, which seen Koshinsky record her ninth, and most important, kill of the afternoon to finish off the visitors by a 25-19 score.
The Huskies will enjoy a bye next weekend, as they rest up before taking the road to Kelowna for a pair of games against the UBC Okanagan Heat. Meanwhile, the Bobcats will be back in action in Brandon on Thursday night in the first game of a home-and-home against the Winnipeg Wesmen.
