The University of Regina's men's basketball team hung on for a wild 79-78 win over the Brandon Bobcats on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars looked to have the game under control after a massive third quarter which saw them outscore Brandon 30-11. Regina led by 17 at one point in the fourth, but the Bobcats chipped away at the lead and then went on a furious 14-1 run capped by an
Anthony Tsegakele triple that put Brandon up 77-74.
Remarkably, that Tsegakele three was the final field goal of the game as only free throws were scored in the final three and a half minutes. The Cougars took the lead back with a pair of Samuel Hillis freebies with a little over two minutes to go, and those were the last two points of the contest.
Brandon had a great look to take the lead with under five seconds to go, but a corner three by
Hans Befus rimmed out and the Cougars held on for the win.
"That was a strange one the way it unfolded in the fourth quarter, but this time of year obviously we'll take a win any way we can get it," Cougars head coach Steve Burrows said. "I thought we played really well in the third, but lost composure in the fourth and they made some shots to get back into it."
Carter Millar led the Cougars (7-7) with a double-double, finishing with 21 points and adding 11 rebounds before leaving the game with a lower-body injury in the fourth. Greishe Clerjuste added 14 points, while Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo ended up with 10.
Jaleel Webb scored a game-high 25 points for Brandon before fouling out late, while Tsegakele finished with 18. Both Bobcats had double-doubles, as Webb pulled down 12 rebounds and Tsegakele led all players with 13.
The Bobcats (1-11) return home next weekend to host Thompson Rivers, while the Cougars will have next weekend off before returning to the court with a couple of road games at Manitoba on Jan. 24 and Jan. 25.
