The Winnipeg Wesmen outscored the Brandon Bobcats 24-8 in a defining third quarter and went on to cruise to a 93-59 victory in a Canada West women's basketball game Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The result moved the Wesmen to 5-0 this season — and 11-0 overall against U Sports competition — but it didn't come as simple as they may have hoped against a BU team that suffered two blowout losses to Saskatchewan to open the season two weeks ago.
The dominant third quarter came after BU played Winnipeg level at 19-19 in the second and went into halftime down just nine at 43-34.
Keylyn Filewich had her biggest game as a Wesmen, with a game-high 27 points and 17 rebounds while shooting 13-for-20 from the field, including 7-for-9 in the second half.
"When she got rolling, we just kept saying 'Get it inside'," McKay said. "The challenge for teams will be when she's firing on all cylinders she not only plays great but she elevates the play of people around her."
Sophomore Anna Kernaghan, a 2019-20 U Sports all-rookie team, had her highest scoring output of 2021 with 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field. Robyn Boulanger added 13, including 4-for-7 from three, and Kyanna Giles filled the stat box again with 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
The Wesmen also got impactful minutes from Jillian Duncan off the bench, who grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds to go with eight points, two blocks and 66 per cent shooting.
Adrianna Proulx and Reetta Tulkki both had 15 points and six rebounds to lead Brandon, which hit six first-half three-pointers but went 2-for-16 after that.
Winnipeg held the Bobcats to 28.8 per cent shooting and forced 23 turnovers.
The Wesmen shot 44.1 per cent from the field, and outrebounded BU 65-42, including 27 offensive rebounds.
The two teams meet again in Brandon on Saturday with tip at 5 p.m.
