The Winnipeg Wesmen are headed into the holiday break with a perfect record thanks in part to career-highs from a starter and a reserve.
Fifth-year forward Keylyn Filewich had a career-high 33 points, third-year forward Jillian Duncan had a career-high 19 points off the bench and the Wesmen women's basketball team improved to 8-0 in Canada West play with a 95-49 victory over the Brandon Bobcats Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.Â
Filewich, who played four seasons at UBC before transferring home for the 2021-22 season, added 12 rebounds, three steals and a block while shooting 14-for-24 from the field.Â
Duncan, who recorded a career-high 17 rebounds in a win Thursday night at Brandon, added 15 boards and three steals in just under 25 minutes.Â
The Bobcats hung in through the first half, trailing 18-13 after a quarter and 40-31 at the half. But the Wesmen outscored BU 28-2 in the third quarter as part of a larger 35-2 run that spanned the first moments of the fourth quarter blew the game wide open.Â
Duncan, who shot 9-for-11 from the field, scored eight straight Wesmen points to end the third quarter and the Wesmen held the Bobcats without a field goal for the final 8:15 of the third quarter and first 2:12 of the fourth.Â
The Wesmen, who shot 52.7 per cent from the field, held the Bobcats to 19 of 71 shooting on the night.Â
Jessica van Dyck contributed a season-high 13 points and six rebounds for the Wesmen, who also got 12 points, seven assists and four steals from Anna Kernaghan.Â
Winnipeg outrebounded Brandon 57-34 and got 66 points in the paint.Â
Reetta Tulkki led the Bobcats (0-8) with 23 points, and Adrianna Proulx had seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.Â
