Bobcats pull off upset for first win

BRANDON, Man. – There was little left to play for other than pride, and the Bobcats brought that in spades Friday night.

The BU women's basketball team picked up an upset 82-79 win over the UNBC Timberwolves at the HLC, cracking the win column for the first time in conference play this season.

"It was an awesome team performance," said coach James Bambury after his first conference win.

"I'm so happy for all of them because they work so freaking hard."

UNBC made it a fight in the last few possessions, but Brandon fifth-year captain Chelsea Misskey dribbled the ball out as time expired, before flinging it high in the air and racing into the open arms of her teammates.

"That was probably the biggest come together I've ever been a part of," says Misskey. "That is what I'm going to miss the most about being a Bobcat because that was probably one of the best nights of my career."

Entering her final weekend of competition in BU blue and gold, the goal was obvious for Misskey and company, but to pull off the upset as a team was extra special.

"It was everyone. It wasn't just one person individually. It was everybody playing their role and doing what they needed to."

Misskey was electric all night, finishing with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. Piper Ingalls led all scorers with 24 points, including a three in the final minute to clinch it.

Noah Garcia had a double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds) while Faith Clearsky had 10 points off the bench.

The game got off to a strong start for the Bobcats, leading after the first quarter after a great take by Josie Grift. Faith Clearsky closed the second quarter with a great baseline drive that gave BU the lead at the break.

While the third quarter has often been the Achilles heel for the Bobcats, the team managed to fight off the surging Wolves. UNBC took a three-point lead in the third but the Bobcats refused to go away.

The Timberwolves were led by Alina Shakirova's team-high 23 points, but fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.

Sveta Boyoka had a double-double, finishing with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

The rematch goes Saturday at the BU Healthy Living Centre as the two teams conclude the Canada West conference schdule.

Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. and Misskey's senior night presentation will take place immediately following the game.
