'Cats Dismantle Dinos on the Road

Box Score

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos were no match for the No. 2 Brandon Bobcats as they were defeated 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-15) on Feb. 7 at Jack Simpson Gym.

Brandon improves to 16-5 to stay in second in Canada West in preparation for the playoff spot they have already clinched, while the Dinos fall to 5-16. The Dinos were officially eliminated from playoffs last weekend.

Rookie Janna Ogle led Calgary with nine kills and nine digs on the night. Ali Wooley added eight kills and 11 digs. Libero Maura Hayes recorded 11 digs and setter Jordhynn Guy added 28 assists.

For the Bobcats, Shanlee McLennan had a game-high 13 kills. Vaovai Aiono added another 12 kills for Brandon. Libero Donata Huebert picked up a game-high 17 kills in the match and setter Kellie Baker recorded 32 assists and ten digs.

Both teams started off the game well, battling back and forth. It was the Dinos who took the first significant lead at 12-9, and carried that three-point lead to the technical, where they were up 16-13.

As the set continued, the Bobcats were flirting with the lead, getting close at 18-17, but Ogle silenced that with her third kill of the night. It wasn't until 21 when Brandon tied the game up. Two Dinos hitting errors put the Bobcats up 23-21 and they never looked back, solidifying the comeback first set win at 25-23.

In the second, the lack lustre effort from the Dinos allowed the visiting Bobcats to take a large lead early on, and hold it down at the technical, up 16-9. Brandon didn't have to pull out anything crazy to cruise to the second set victory as the Dinos struggled on both offence and defence. The Bobcats locked up the win at 25-13.

The third set saw the Dinos keep the game tied up until six, in which point the No. 2 Bobcats went on a 6-0 run thanks to the serving of Aiono. Unable to put some points together, the Dinos dropped further off the radar, allowing the Bobats to take a 17-8 lead.

From there it was another easy set for Brandon to hold down and win as they completed the game with a 25-15 win the sweep the Dinos for the night.

Both teams will go at it again tomorrow night in the final regular season game, and the Dinos last game of the 2013-14 season, at Jack Simpson Gym at 5 p.m.
