Season-by-Season Recap

The 1979-80 Bobcat men's basketball team laid the foundation for the programs long-running success in the years to follow.

Brandon finished the '79-80 season with an overall record of 40-and-10. At the time, it was the best season in BU men's basketball history. They finished in first-place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with a near perfect record of 15-1.

The Bobcats claimed their first-ever GPAC title by knocking off their provincial rival, the Winnipeg Wesmen in the final to advance to the CIAU tournament for the first time.

At nationals, the Bobcats edged York 91-90 in the quarter-finals and beat Winnipeg in the semifinals 85-81 before dropping a 73-65 decision against the Victoria Vikes in the final.

The 1981-82 Bobcats captured a third straight Great Plains Athletic Conference championship by defeating the Lakehead Nor'Westers 78-73. Keith Wilder had an impressive showing in the series clinching game with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

BU's national title run came to an end in the semifinals after falling 75-68 against the eventual champion and tournament host Victoria Vikes.

The Bobcats still returned home with a bronze medal after Will Marshall's 23-point performance powered the Blue and Gold past the Montreal-based Concordia Stingers 81-77 in the bronze medal game.

The 1982-83 Bobcats completed a GPAC four-peat after knocking off the Winnipeg Wesmen 95-81 in the deciding game of the championship series.

At CIAU nationals in Waterloo, the Bobcats earned the bronze medal after prevailing 85-72 against the St. Mary's Huskies.

BU had to overcome the emotions of dropping a down to the wire semifinal to the host Warriors 73-72.

"This game was a credit to our team," coach Jerry Hemmings told the Brandon Sun. "A lot of times when a team comes so close to being in the big game and doesn't make it, they die in the next game, but we showed character."

The 1983-84 Bobcats made it to the pinnacle of Canadian university hoops.

The Bobcats claimed their fifth consecutive Great Plains Athletic Conference championship by sweeping the Winnipeg Wesmen in the best-of-three final.

Brandon's next stop was Ottawa where Charles Douthit was selected as MVP at the Mid-East Regionals. The blue and gold defeated the host GeeGees 94-78 and then a nail-biter against the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 70-69.

BU advanced to nationals in Halifax. The Bobcats booked their spot in the gold medal game after knocking off the Waterloo Warriors 68-61. They were edged 70-62 by the Victoria Vikes in the final.
