Bhatti earns conference all-star award

After another outstanding season, Sultan Haider Bhatti has earned another impressive distinction.

The third-year Laval, Que. product was named a Canada West second team all-star with the announcement of the conference's selections Tuesday morning.

Bhatti had an all-Canadian caliber season, leading the team in multiple stat categories and ranking among the best in the conference and the nation on both ends of the court.

"He has been one of the top players in Canada all season and the only player in Canada West to average a double-double," says coach Gil Cheung.

"He has put in countless hours as he is constantly working on his game. He's been a leader for us and I'm really surprised that he wasn't recognized as a first team all-star. His numbers speak for themselves, but we're proud of him and look forward to what he continues to do for us."

Bhatti averaged more than a double-double all season long, averaging 19.1 points per game and 11.2 rebounds per game. He also ranked among the conference's best in 3-point percentage (42.8), steals (50), and total points (382), all while playing the second most minutes in the conference.

He was named BU's January athlete of the month following career highs in both points (32) and rebounds (19) after a challenging road trip to MacEwan back in mid-Jaunary.

There's no time to celebrate however as Bhatti and the Bobcats get set to open the playoffs Wednesday afternoon. The 'Cats will play the Saskatchewan Huskies at the University of Manitoba in first round action at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets, webcast, and all other tournament information can be found at the official Canada West playoff site.
