It all started in 1952, when a young Richard McDonald was recruited by Hockey Hall of Famer Dr. Angus Jukes to leave his Melville, Saskatchewan home and come to Brandon to star with the Brandon Caps in both hockey and football.
As a student-athlete, Dick went on to compete in two sports for years and participated in Student Council activities including being the Chairman of the Athletic Board.  When he completed his athletic career at BU, Dick went on to coach the BU Football team for one year.

Dick’s relationship with BU has carried on for the over 60 years.  Dick is a phenomenal fundraiser and current member of the successful BU Campaign Cabinet Committee (2004-present).

Dick is also an outstanding supporter of all four Bobcat Ahtletic teams, having created along with his wife Verda, the "Dick and Verda McDonald Bursary" - a financial award for student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically.

Dick coached high school football and basketball for seven years and refereed the same for 12 years.

Dick has also had distinguished careers in teaching, financial investment management and in the Canadian Forces.  His involvement with the Forces started in 1960 and evolved with leadership positions from Commander of the 26th Field Artillery Regiment, to Lieutenant Colonel, to Honorary Colonel.
