George Kunyckyj was the leader and heart and soul of the Bobcats football team from 1967-70, quarterbacking an offense that put up outstanding numbers and impressive performances against great opponents.
Â
Kunyckyj was born in Germany and moved to the Wheat City in 1964 and graduated from Brandon Collegiate Institute in 1966. He played high school football with the Brandon Krugers, a club made up of students from the three high schools in the city. In his senior year, he helped guide the team to a league championship when they were victorious against the Virden Golden Bears in the final.
Â
Kunyckyj's career as a Bobcat was rewarded following his last season at BU, when he was drafted in the sixth round (52nd overall) of the 1970 Canadian Football League draft to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Â
Despite having very little experience at quarterback when he started his career at BU, Kunyckyj went on to set multiple school records that stood until the end of the Bobcat football program, including most passes completed in a single game (10), passes completed in one season (59), passing yards in a single game (236), and passing yards in a season (939).
Â
Then coach and Athletic Director Doug Steeves said in an interview in the Brandon Sun in February of 1970, "I receieved three phone calls from teams in Western Canada about Kunyckyj. Kunyckyj has all the potential in the world to become a top-notch pro quarterback, although he's only had three years of quarterbacking experience behind him."
Â
Kunyckyj graduated from BU in 1970 with a bachelors of science and then took one year of education and started teaching and coaching in Winnipeg in 1971 where he continued his greatness on the gridiron.
Â
He coached 25 years in Winnipeg, first with Elmwood from 1971 to 1976 and then at Daniel McIntyre from 1977 to 1997, which included a league championship in 1978.
Â
Kunyckyj has been a public address announcer for the Winnipeg High School Football League for 20 years since stepping away from the sidelines as a coach.
