John Miller has been called ‘Mr YMCA’. He dedicated his life to the Brandon YMCA. John worked for seven years at the front desk. After World War II he returned to the ‘Y’ as athletic director. In 1952, John became general secretary and held the position until 1971.
As an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, John received recognition as a recipient of the meritous service medal and the Diamond Jubilee Medal. John graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Brandon University. As a youth, John played for several YMCA basketball squads, including one that won the provincial junior men’s championship in 1933-34.
He was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985. John loved the game of basketball in which in played, coached and refereed. The YMCA gymnasium was named the ‘John Miller Gymnasium’ in his honour in 1992.
