Joel Small had a big career as a member of the Bobcats men's volleyball team. As part of the inaugural team in 2005-06 in his freshman season, Small made an immediate impact that lasted over his four years at Brandon University.
Â
Small set several school records and inked his name in the Canada West record books as well. He's the BU career leader in solo blocks (57), block assists (260) and total blocks (317), which are especially impressive feats considering he set those totals in just four years as a member of the Bobcats.
Â
Small also had the two best individual performances in school history in terms of blocks, putting up 13 blocks against Saskatchewan on January 26, 2007 and 12 against Trinity Western on January 31, 2009, records that haven't been touched to this day.
Â
He stands fourth in total points (807) for his career behind fellow Bobcat greats Paul Sanderson, Sam Tuivai and Kevin Miller.
Â
Most importantly, Small played a large role in the Bobcats reaching the national stage early in the program's history, capturing a CIS national bronze medal just four years into the program's existence in 2009.
Â
Upon leaving the Bobcats program Small was invited to the National Team Training Centre in Gatineau, Quebec, where he trained before returning home to Brandon to begin his career with Child and Family Services.
