Basketball was Stew Farnell’s refuge from the mundane. Farnell was a 1967 graduate of Brandon University. Stew coached the Vincent Massey high school girls’ team for 24 seasons where his teams became synonymous with excellence.

He guided his teams to five provincial championships and four more appearances in the final game. In total, Stew’s team made 13 appearances at the Final Four and he compiled an astonishing record of 510 wins and 209 losses.

His 1975 provincial championship team went undefeated and posted a perfect record of 25-and-0. In the 1980’s his team had a string of 50 consecutive wins. Stew played both football and basketball with the Brandon College Caps in the early 1960’s. He later went on to assist Gary Howard and Mike Spack with both the men’s and women’s teams. In 1996, Stew was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame.
