Larry Rodenbush joined the BU football team under legendary coach Doug Steeves in 1968, where he would play five full seasons of football and two seasons of basketball under coach Gary Howard.
Born in Oxbow, Sask., Rodenbush moved to Brandon as a teen where he fell in love with football and basketball as a graduate of Brandon Collegiate.
Known as a “big guy who played with an even bigger heart”, Rodenbush played offensive centre for five years and played both sides of the ball for three years as a defensive tackle. His efforts earned him team Most Improved Player honours in 1972, and with that came the opportunity the small-town boy had dreamed of.
Rodenbush became the final member of the BU football team to be drafted in the Canadian Football League, selected 67th overall by the Montreal Alouettes.
He reported to Alouettes camp before having his rights picked up by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Managementwith the Riders sent him back to BU to play his final year of university football.
In his final year he was offered a teaching job, and he never looked back from there, spending 32 years as an educator with the Brandon School Division.
