Gary Howard was both a successful player and a great coach for the Brandon University Bobcat basketball program. Howard knew the balance between the intricacies of basketball and being a demanding coach. All through his career, at BU and during the 21 year he spent at the University of Calgary, Howard wanted to win.
Â
After completing his playing career, Howard was named head coach of the Bobcats in 1969. He was on a mission to build the basketball program and knew he had only two years before the Bobcats entered the strong Western Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Â
Gary recruited players like Dave Bauman, whom he had coached in Oregon and later on Mike Vaira. He reached into Ontario to recruit Bill Moody and Bill Warren and into Winnipeg to recruit a number of players out of Dave Guss’ Westwood Collegiate basketball program. Since the team lacked height, he taught them an aggressive style of play. He had a game plan and he instilled the will to win in his players.
