Jerry Abernathy is recognized as the foundation of the men’s Bobcat basketball program’s winning tradition.
During his four years as a Bobcat (1977-1981), no other player has made a bigger impact on the defensive end of the game than Jerry Abernathy.
At 6-10, Abernathy became known as ‘Mr Eraser’ for his outstanding shot blocking abilities. His presence on defence opened up an entirely new dimension for the ‘Cats game.
Abernathy was named to the All-Conference First-Team three times (1979-81) and was also an honourable mention All-Canadian in 1979. He also earned a berth on the All-Canadian Second Team in 1980 and 1981. He set the Bobcats single season and individual rebounding records in the 1978-79 season, as ‘Ab’ averaged 16 rebounds per game and pulled down 29 boards in one game against Lakehead University. Jerry scored a career-high 38 points against the University of Winnipeg in the 1978-79 season.
